Battle of Wine, Haro, Rioja, Spain – 29th June 2016

Forget the stain remover, this is a rare occasion when spilling red wine is totally acceptable! This annual wine battle unfolds in Rioja’s town of Haro as part of celebrations for their Saint Peter. Participants (dressed in white) armed with jugs, bottles, water pistols (and any other vessels they can get their hands on) throw red wine cheerily over each other – fantastic!

Dating back from traditions three centuries old, ‘La Batalla del Vino’ also involves a procession with the town mayor and a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of San Felices de Bilibio, the patron saint of Haro.
