About Ryan
What is your most memorable travel experience?
At the age of eight, my wanderlust was ignited during a transformative two-month backpacking adventure through Southeast Asia with my family. Each of us was entrusted with planning and organising a week of our journey. I eagerly embraced this responsibility, only to later discover that my dad had secretly pre-arranged my week, subtly guiding my choices.
During those two months, we immersed ourselves in captivating expeditions along the Malaysian coast, ventured through Vietnam’s historic Cu Chi tunnels, marvelled at the UNESCO site of Angkor Wat, and experienced thrilling moments such as zip-lining and sleeping in treehouses amidst Laos’s lush landscapes, awakened by the calls of gibbons.
Which destination is next on your list?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to explore various parts of the world, yet Europe, right on my doorstep, has often been overlooked. My resolution is to uncover Europe’s hidden gems, starting with the Azores Islands nestled in the Atlantic Ocean. Often referred to as the Hawaii of Europe, this archipelago boasts stunning natural landscapes, including volcanic craters along its coastlines. The unique climate, characterised by prevailing winds and salty air, fosters vineyards in “corrals” — volcanic stone enclosures rich in nutrients that retain heat during the day. Adding to its allure, the Azores host Europe’s oldest and only official tea plantation.
