Set on the banks of the River Ill in the small Alsatian village of Illhaeusern, the Hôtel des Berges is an intimate boutique hotel wrapped in verdant and floral gardens.

Once a barn for drying tobacco leaves, this chalet-style property has been transformed into an elegant, five-star hotel, complete with a sleek organic spa and a two-Michelin-starred restaurant.

In a nod to the barn’s original use, each of the 16 rooms and suites is named after a brand of cigar. Uniquely designed in Havana style, they feature warm hues, lots of wood, textured fabrics, and a mix of antique and modern furniture. Most rooms feature a balcony, along with lovely views over the garden and river. A Fisherman’s House and Airstream provide additional quirky accommodation.

Breakfast is a treat that can be enjoyed in your room, on the terrace, in the garden or even on the River Ill. The real star of the show however is the Auberge de l’Ill. A local institution with two Michelin stars, the restaurant serves a beautiful blend of classic and more creative cuisine, showcasing local produce. Round off your evening with a drink in the Havana-style bar.

A modernist barn in the garden provides the hub for the Spa des Saules. Here you can take a dip in the seasonal heated outdoor pool, relax in the sauna and hammam, or enjoy a soothing massage.
