Piedmont cities and towns
Turin
The most well-known city is the region’s capital, Turin, home to the Fiat car company, Juventus football club and, of course, the world’s most famous Shroud. Let’s not forget the gianduja!
Turin has a fascinating historic center and a long list of elegant aristocratic residences of times gone by, breathtaking Baroque architecture, world-class museums.
Alba
The medieval city of Alba sits at the crossroads of the Langhe and Roero territories and is one of the gastronomic capitals of Italy.
Alba is full of events often focused on food and wine heritage. Every year, between October and November, the oldest White Truffle Fair takes place in the city. It also hosts the World Truffle Market event, where visitors can find many types of certified truffles!
Visit Alba from July to November and join lovely trained dogs on their truffle hunting.
Canelli
Nearby Canelli is crammed with ancient churches and grand palazzo, and surrounded by hillside vineyards growing the Moscato grapes used to produce the region’s famous Asti Spumante wine.
The medieval urban fabric, densely built, runs along hill slopes, where on top emerge the most valuable buildings from an architectural point of view.
Other valuable architectural gems are found underground. The underground cathedrals are so called because of the majesty of their vaulted rooms. They were dug from the 19th century in the basement of Canelli’s city centre and represent real masterpieces of engineering and architecture.
Barolo
And let’s not forget the town that gives its name to Piedmont’s most famous export, Barolo wines. Barolo is located in the UNESCO landscape region collectively referred to as Langhe – Roero – Monferrato.
Here you can marvel at the impressive castle that has been converted into a winery while sampling some of its wares. The castle is thought to date back to the 10th century and was originally a fortress for defense against invading Hungarians and Saracens.
On the way to the castle you can peek into the Corkscrew Museum, which offers 500 specimens from the 18th century to today, of various artistic periods, countries, and types.
