When to Visit Tuscany: Your Ultimate Seasonal Guide

There’s something timeless about Tuscany.

Maybe it’s the golden hills that catch the last light of day, or the villages that haven’t changed in centuries. But while Tuscany is beautiful year-round, when you go (and where you head) can completely shape your experience.

Whether you’re dreaming of the best curated wine experiences in Italy, vineyard strolls under spring blossoms, autumn truffle hunts in misty woods or a summer escape to the coast, this guide will help you time your trip just right.

No matter the season, Tuscany has something up its sleeve for every wine lover, and we’re here to help you find it.

Tuscany by Season: When to Visit

Not sure which time of year is best to visit Tuscany? While you can’t really go wrong, here’s your guide to where to visit during each of Tuscany’s seasons and what you’ll find there throughout the months.

Spring (March - May)

The sun breaking through patches of clouds onto the vibrant vineyards of Radda in Chianti, overlooked by the distant estate in Siena, Tuscany, Italy.

Quiet beauty and blooming countryside

Spring is, in our opinion, Tuscany’s hidden gem. With mild weather, blooming wildflowers and vineyards waking gently from winter, it’s a top time to explore before things get busy. The crowds of summer are still months away, meaning you’ll have tranquil hill towns and vineyard paths almost to yourself.

During Spring, Tuscany’s event calendar is jam-packed. Visit during Easter for parades and firework displays, explore Florence’s flower markets at the end of April and get stuck into the city’s prestigious arts festival at the Teatro del Maggio in May.

Best time to visit Tuscany for: Countryside walks, garden tours and intimate vineyard visits for early-season wine tasting.

Where to go in Tuscany: Wander through the gentle hills of the Val d’Orcia, bike the historic walls of Lucca or enjoy leisurely drives through the fresh greenery of Chianti.

Summer (June - August)

The relaxing pool built into the elegant, beige tiled patio area of the Borgo Pignano, surrounded by the stunning views of the verdant countryside and hills of Tuscany, Italy.

Sun, sun… and more sun

Summertime in Tuscany is all about vibrant energy, warm evenings and an array of festivals and events. Days are long and landscapes are golden, perfect for al fresco dinners or late-night strolls through lively piazzas.

Keep in mind cities can become crowded and hot during the summer months, so we recommend heading to the coast or finding shade in rural retreats.

Best time to visit Tuscany for: Coastal escapes, lively cultural festivals and dinners under the stars.

Where to go in Tuscany: Catch Florence early in the summer before peak crowds, experience Siena’s thrilling Palio horse races in July and August or relax along the Tuscan coast at Maremma or Elba Island. Or all of the above, if you have time!

Autumn (September - October)

The foggy, autumnal landscape surrounding the Abbey of Passignano, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Antinori, Tuscany Italy.

The foodie’s favourite

If you’re a lover of food and wine, autumn is your season. The grape harvest transforms vineyards into vibrant hubs of activity, while truffle hunts and olive harvests offer unique adventures.

Cooler days and fewer tourists make this an idyllic time to soak up Tuscany’s incredible dining scene, too.

Best time to visit Tuscany for: Winery visits, food-focused travel and truffle-hunting experiences.

Where to go in Tuscany: Head to Montepulciano or Montalcino for wine festivals and tastings, or visit San Miniato to hunt for the elusive white truffle.

Winter (November - February)

The enchanting thermal waters running through the rocky land around an old, cobblestone building in Saturnia, a spa town in Tuscany, Italy.

Cosy, quiet and atmospheric

Winter wraps Tuscany in a whole new atmosphere, offering cosy experiences, like fireside wine tastings, intimate museum visits and sparkling Christmas markets.

It’s a wonderful time to enjoy Florence, Siena or Pisa without crowds, taking advantage of lower prices and peaceful exploration.

Best time to visit Tuscany for: Quiet city breaks, cultural experiences without the crowds and luxe thermal spa visits.

Where to go in Tuscany: Explore Florence’s museums at leisure, admire Siena’s peaceful winter streets or unwind in the warm thermal waters of spa towns like Saturnia and Bagno Vignoni.

Overview of When to Visit Tuscany

Season What to Expect Weather Highlights
Spring (April to May) Tuscany's countryside comes into bloom, with vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery. An ideal time to visit for pleasant weather, pre-peak season. Mild and pleasant, typically ranging from 17°C to 23°C. Perfect for visiting iconic cities like Florence and Siena before the peak summer crowds arrive.
Summer (June to August) Peak tourist season, so keep in mind that popular destinations like Florence will be packed. We recommend seeking out coastal areas and more rural regions. Long, hot days frequently exceeding 30°C. The season for famous outdoor events, such as the Palio in Siena and open-air opera festivals.
Autumn (September to October) Harvest season sees Tuscany come to life, especially in the wine regions, with grape-picking (Vendemmia) and olive harvests. Warm, sunny days with cool, crisp evenings (temperatures around 20°C to 26°C). Visit in September for the Chianti grape harvest festivals, or October for white truffles and fresh-pressed olive oil.
Winter (November to March) Low season means temperatures will be cooler and rainfall more likely, but museums and attractions will be completely crowd-free. Colder and with increased rainfall, ranging from 5°C to 15°C. Ideal for cultural attractions in cities like Florence, Lucca, or Pisa, and cosy stays in the countryside.

Timing Your Trip Around Tuscany’s Events

The ever-changing calendar of events here can also influence when to visit Tuscany. Many of these experiences offer the chance to explore the region from a different perspective.

Palio di Siena (July & August)

Experience the one-of-a-kind horse races that electrify Siena’s historic centre. Held twice a year, on 2th July and 16th August, the event sees ten horses and riders racing to represent ten of Siena’s seventeen contrade (historic neighbourhoods). The long-standing tradition dates back to the 17th century.

Chianti Wine Festival (September)

Join wine lovers in Greve in Chianti for tastings and celebrations of the local harvest. Held in the central piazza each September, the festival brings together Chianti Classico producers for an annual tasting showcase. In 2026, the festival will take place between 12th and 18th September.

White Truffle Festival in San Miniato (November)

Truffle hunting in Tuscany

Explore the region’s prized treasures with truffle markets and gourmet dining, across the last three weekends in November. While the white truffles are the star of the show, you’ll find special appearances from other gastronomic delights, such as cheeses and olive oil.

Easter Celebrations in Florence (March/April)

A view of the orange roofs of Florence, with the stunning Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore towering over the rest of the city, on a sunny day in Tuscany, Italy.

Take part in traditional festivities, including the spectacular “Scoppio del Carro” (Explosion of the Cart). This 350-year-old tradition sees an antique, three-story cart packed with fireworks and pulled by white oxen to the Duomo. During the Easter Sunday mass, the Archbishop lights a rocket shaped like a mechanical dove — this speeds along a wire to ignite the cart, resulting in a spectacular firework display.

Lucca Summer Festival (June - July)

Lucca in Tuscany

Enjoy international music performances in a beautiful historic setting. Founded in 1998, the festival has become a cult event in Italy, with world-renowned artists travelling to Lucca’s Piazza Napoleone to perform. The 2026 line up includes John Legend, Tom Jones, Jamiroquai, Katy Perry and Ludovico Einaudi.

FAQs About When to Visit Tuscany

What is the best month to visit Tuscany?

The region is lovely year-round, but in our opinion, two of the best months to visit Tuscany are May and September. These months boast warm (but not too hot) weather and fewer crowds than the summer months.

During May, the countryside is at its most lush and vibrant, while September brings the grape harvest making it the ideal time for wine lovers to visit Tuscany. Get in touch with our Travel Designers for help deciding which month is best based on your preferences.

What is the rainy season in Tuscany?

While Tuscany does not have a prolonged tropical wet season, the rainiest months tend to be October and November, with November historically experiencing the most rainfall. Spring (especially March and April) also sees a higher frequency of rain showers and brief storms. Locals refer to the unpredictability of the weather during these months as ‘pazzarello‘ (loosely translating to crazy).

Best time to visit Tuscany's vineyards?

Typically, the best time to visit Tuscany’s vineyards is September and October, when the wine estates will be busy and buzzing with the grape harvest (known as Vendemmia in Italian). Experience the grape harvest, enjoy the autumnal colours and stay in October to witness the olive harvest, too.

Alternatively, mid-April to June is a good time to visit to see the vineyards at their most lush and green, with milder temperatures and fewer tourist crowds. Although the grape harvest won’t yet be in full-swing, this is a lovely time to visit for wine tastings and cycling through the vines.

When to visit Tuscany for wine?

The best times to visit Tuscany for wine tours are spring (between April and June) and autumn (September and October). During spring, the vines will be awakening and the countryside will be at its most lush, while September and October are the months for the Tuscan grape harvest (vendemmia).
