Wine Tasting Tours from Cape Town

Few cities in the world stop you in your tracks the way Cape Town does. Table Mountain above it, the Atlantic on one side, False Bay on the other – and between them, one of the world’s most vibrant and culturally layered cities.

Explore the Bo-Kaap’s painted streets, browse boutiques along the V&A Waterfront, lose an afternoon in the Zeitz MOCAA’s contemporary collection, and drive a coastline that runs from penguin colonies at Boulders Beach to the dramatic cliffs of Cape Point, all before dinner at one of the city’s acclaimed restaurants.

Cape Town is an exciting destination in its own right, but also the perfect base for exploring beyond it. Wine tasting from Cape Town couldn’t be easier: the Winelands are within an hour’s drive, and we know exactly which estates to call ahead for. Whether you’re here for the city, the wine, or both, we’ll make sure every detail is taken care of.

FAQs About Cape Town Wine Tours

What are the best places to stay in Cape Town for first-time visitors?

Cape Town offers a range of neighbourhoods that suit different travel styles, but for a first visit, it’s best to choose areas that balance scenery, safety, and access to the city’s highlights. Our top picks are:

  1. The V&A Waterfront — central, secure and packed with restaurants, shops and easy access to other parts of the city.
  2. Camps Bay — A stylish beachside suburb with palm-lined promenades, chic cafés and Atlantic sunset views.
  3. Clifton — A chic and secluded neighbourhood with pristine beaches and sumptuous villas.
  4. Sea Point — Best for laid-back, coastal living, Sea Point has a buzzing promenade and is the perfect middleground between the Waterfront and Camps Bay.
  5. Green Point — Perfectly central location next to the Waterfront, this gives travellers a more residential vibe while still being close to sites and nightlife.
  6. De Waterkant — A compact, colourful district full of design-forward boutique stays and a vibrant dining scene.

Each offers a unique lens to life in Cape Town, but are equally well-suited to first-time visitors.

How easy is it to get from Cape Town to the Winelands?

Cape Town is the gateway to South Africa’s Winelands, with the oldest, Constantia, nestled just 15km from the Waterfront. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are each within an hour’s drive, making them easily accessible for those who choose to base themselves in the city (though we highly recommend staying at a wine estate for a contrasting experience!).

Looking east to the vineyards along the Garden Route, like those near Hermanus and the sparkling wine estates around Plettenberg Bay, we recommend extending your trip for a few nights moving along the coast. This gives you time to enjoy each area in its own right.

How many days in Cape Town is enough?

For Cape Town itself, we recommend at least 3-4 days before moving on to the Winelands, Garden Route or a safari. There is so much to do in and around the city that it warrants taking your time to fully immerse yourself in the city’s history, arts and culture.

What is the best month to go to Cape Town?

There’s no single best month to visit Cape Town, but generally the best season is September through May, which covers spring through autumn and avoids the rainier summer hemisphere winter months. What we recommend depends entirely on the type of experience you want to have:

  • For Cape Town and the Coast -> November to February for hot, sunny summer days, perfect for beaches and vineyards.
  • For Wildflowers and Wine -> September to October, when fynbos blooms and the Winelands burst into bud.
  • For Combining with a Safari -> May to October, where less dense foliage and drier weather in the Kruger make game viewing easier, though Cape Town can be rainier.
  • For Whale Watching -> July to November, when southern right whales migrate north and can be seen off the cliffs near Hermanus.

Our recommendations? October and April, which give you the best overlap of everything for a well-rounded travel experience.

What are the Cape Town Big 6?

The Cape Town Big 6 are a collection of popular sites and attractions that travellers enjoy seeing in and around the city. They include:

  • Cape Point — a rocky outcrop at the southwestern tip of Africa with a 150-year-old lighthouse.
  • Groot Constantia — South Africa’s oldest producing wine farm, established in 1685.
  • Kirstenbosch — South Africa’s national botanical garden, full of incredible biodiversity and proclaimed one of the greatest in the world.
  • Robben Island — The prison island where Nelson Mandela was held, offering a sombre but insightful look at the country’s history.
  • Table Mountain Cableway — An exhilarating cable car that takes you to the top of Cape Town’s most stunning natural wonder.
  • V&A Waterfront — The iconic harbour that was invaluable to the history and settlement of Cape Town, now a thriving city district.
