Luxury Tours of the Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands are, in our view, one of the greatest wine travel destinations on the planet. The scenery is dramatic and everything is close, yet each valley has its own identity, terroir, and relationship with the two oceans that cool the vines. The result is a huge diversity of wine styles that rivals anywhere in the Old World.

For our clients, a Cape Winelands trip is defined by the types of experiences they’d like to have. Private tastings with the winemaker or the Franschhoek Wine Tram with friends. A long farm lunch at Babylonstoren or a precision tasting menu at Tokara. Old-vine Swartland Chenin Blanc or the structured reds of Stellenbosch’s Simonsberg. We know these estates, these cellars and these tables, and we know how to put the right combination in front of the right traveller.

These are simply handpicked suggestions for the kind of Cape Winelands tour you might have. Yours will be tailored and refined until it matches you completely.

FAQs About the Cape Winelands

What makes the Cape Winelands unique compared to other wine regions?

The Cape Winelands stand apart for their rare combination of diversity, accessibility and natural beauty. Within a compact region, you’ll find an extraordinary breadth of wine styles, from classical Bordeaux-inspired reds in Stellenbosch to the more experimental, terroir-driven wines of the Swartland, alongside a vibrant, evolving food scene.

The landscape is equally compelling: dramatic mountain backdrops, vineyard-lined valleys and protected UNESCO biosphere reserves create a setting as suited to hiking as it is to leisurely tastings. All of this lies just a short drive from Cape Town, allowing for a seamless blend of world-class wine, coastal city energy and refined relaxation.

Distinctive Cape Dutch architecture and elegant vineyard estates further elevate the experience, while the ease of combining the Winelands with safaris or the Garden Route makes it uniquely versatile among the world’s great wine regions.

Which wine varieties are the Cape Winelands best known for?

The Cape Winelands are renowned for many wine varieties, including Chenin Blanc, celebrated for its versatility and elegance, from crisp and mineral to richly textured styles. Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, particularly from Stellenbosch, offer structure and impressive ageing potential, while Syrah is admired for its depth and spice.

The region also excels in Sauvignon Blanc, and is uniquely the birthplace of Pinotage, South Africa’s signature variety, found nowhere else in the world.

How many days should I spend in the Cape Winelands?

How many days you spend in the Cape Winelands depends on how many of the region’s villages you’d like to visit. To get the most out of your experience at an unhurried pace, we recommend at least 3-4 nights in the Winelands and up to 5-7 nights if you want to explore more off-the-beaten-track wine districts.

What is the best time to visit the Cape Winelands?

The best time to visit the Cape Winelands is from November to April. These warmer months bring long, sunny days perfect for vineyard visits and outdoor tastings.

Harvest season, from February to April, creates a buzz of activity, while spring (September to November) offers a super bloom of wildflowers and fewer crowds. The summer months of December to February are when the winelands truly come alive and are at their most vibrant, but are also the busiest.

Can the Winelands be combined with a safari or Cape Town stay?

Tours through the Cape Winelands pair perfectly with a safari or Cape Town stay (and often both!). Many itineraries begin in Cape Town, before visiting renowned districts like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and then heading to private game reserves for safaris in the Eastern Cape or Kruger region.

This combination offers a truly diverse travel experience. From refined tastings and estate stays to close encounters with wildlife and the buzz of the city, you can have a well-rounded and unforgettable travel experience.

Want to take it to the next level? Consider adding in a few rounds of golf with sea-view courses, lagoon tours, hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains and more — there are options for every palate.

What are the best wine estates to stay at in the Winelands?

There are so many estates we could choose from, but a few of our favourites to stay at in the Cape Winelands are:

1. Babylonstoren for a refined Cape Dutch, organic farm stay

  1. Spier, home to the oldest dated cellar still in use in South Africa
  2. Boschendal for farm-to-fork dining and outdoor adventures
  3. La Residence in Franschhoek for sweeping mountain views
  4. Delaire Graff for contemporary dining and spa experiences

It goes without saying that all offer incredible hospitality and fantastic wines!
