How long does it take to drive the Garden Route?
If you drive the Garden Route straight through from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, it would take about 10 hours. With that said, we definitely recommend taking your time and spreading this over 5-7 days to enjoy the journey!
Is Plettenberg Bay worth visiting?
For wine lovers interested in an under-the-radar region, Plettenberg Bay is definitely worth visiting to try South Africa’s renowned Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines, which the small but mighty region is known for. Beyond the bubbly though, the town of Plettenberg Bay itself is charming with expansive sea views and coastal hiking trails. It’s also near the Addo Elephant Park, a well-loved Big Five reserve.
What is the best time to visit the Garden Route?
From November to April, is the best window to visit the Garden Route, when the scenery bursts into bloom and flowers across South Africa’s summer season. Weather stays balmy, rarely under 18°C and the perfect respite from the northern hemisphere’s winter.

How many days you need for the Garden Route depends entirely on how much you’d like to do (and trust us, there’s a lot). We recommend a minimum of four nights, but for more in-depth tours along this diverse coastline, you could spend up to two weeks!
Combine with 2-3 nights each in Cape Town and Winelands for a nice 8-12 day South African itinerary.
