Montevideo
This historic town once surrounded by fortifications is filled with bustling markets where you can enjoy a tasting of local wines at a chic urban winery. Museums, independent designers, bookshops, antique shops and architecture complete the experience in the old town.
Although Uruguay shares tango and the gaucho culture with neighbouring Argentina, Montevideo is proudly the host of the longest carnival in the world. Taking place for over a month, murgas and candombe dancers showcase the old days’ melting pot of cultures.
However, Montevideo goes beyond the city into the countryside, with some of the oldest vineyards in the country. Embark on an adventure in Uruguay and enjoy their magnificent hospitality.
Canelones
Explore the picturesque vineyards of Canelones, Uruguay’s premier wine region. Canelones produces 60% of Uruguayan wine on fertile soils and undulating hillsides, and grows the the greatest diversity of grape varieties in Uruguay.
Visit family-owned wineries to sample robust Tannat wines and learn about the region’s winemaking traditions with a backdrop of the idyllic countryside.
You can also relax on its white-sand beaches, from busy to quiet, and enjoy the South Atlantic Ocean.
Colonia
Visit the historic town of Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through its cobblestone streets and colonial buildings before heading to a nearby winery for a private tour.
Colonia del Sacramento was the first city to be founded in Uruguay. Located by Rio de la Plata, it delights visitors with the cobblestone streets and colonial buildings of the tiny old town. Although South America was largely colonised by the Spanish, it was the Portuguese who first settled and founded the city. Today, Colonia is the city in the continent were Portuguese and Spanish influences coexist.
Colonia boasts a vast list of gastronomic options and is home to the oldest winery in Uruguay.
The estancias
Learn about Uruguay’s ranching heritage with a visit to an estancia (ranch). Try your hand at traditional gaucho activities, enjoy a hearty asado and sample wines from the ranch’s own vineyard, all while immersed in the rural beauty of the countryside.
