SmoothRed Explores Louma: Dorset’s Coolest New Luxury Farm Stay

To me, the best moments in travel are the ones where the eddy of thought and urgency gently slip away.

Moments that reveal an inner stillness difficult to achieve in busy modern lives. At Louma Country Hotel, a relative newcomer on the luxury UK farm stay scene, these moments are carefully curated without ever feeling forced and from the moment you arrive, you can simply breathe. And be.

Just ahead of English wine week, I was invited for a night on behalf of SmoothRed to experience this peaceful countryside retreat. Originally from middle America, I jumped on the opportunity for some rural respite. Here is why I think it should be next on your travel plans.

Louma’s History

Louma farmhouse exterior

The 130-acre estate was formerly Spence Farm, a pristine parcel of pasture, vineyards, rolling hills and dense woodland in western Dorset’s Marshwood Vale.

In 2020, the farm came under the ownership of Louis and Emma Steyn, who were on the hunt for the perfect plot to set up their dream boutique farm stay in the UK. Louis’ roots are in hospitality, from the same family as such esteemed South Africa properties as The Saxon Hotel, Steyn City and Shambala Private Game Reserve. When they came upon Spence Farm, they knew they’d found the perfect fit for their vision.

Louis’ interests in biodiversity and Emma’s passion for farming, brought Louma to life. Together they began development, rewilding the land and repurposing former farm buildings into luxury accommodation under the strict planning permissions required of being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

They looked to other rewilding projects like Knepp and Wakelyns for inspiration, focusing on soil health and biodiversity to ensure that Louma was first and foremost a retreat into nature and sustainable working farm, as well as a luxury hotel.

How to Get to Louma

Louma is nestled in western Dorset near Bridport, with southerly sea views. My train arrived direct from London Waterloo to Axminster in about two and half hours, making it an easy journey from the capital. We were greeted by Louma’s own Land Rover Defender for the 15 minute transfer to the hotel.

If you’re arriving internationally or based in other areas of the country, we can happily arrange private transfers and pickups from Heathrow or a number of other regional airports. You might also choose to self-drive and on arrival, will be met by the team’s valet to help you settle in. If you’ve got the means and fancy an upgraded entrance, there’s a heli-port just 10 minutes from the hotel!

Louma is truly boutique, with just 16 keys. You’re spoiled for choice of suites, from the Farmhouse with its five rooms, to the Timber Stables, each with their own patio and wood-fired hot tub – where I was fortunately put up!

Other options include the converted Stone Barn, with a cottage and two-level suite; The Furrow, a self-contained two-bedroom unit with floor-to-ceiling windows; and several cosy Shepherd’s Huts. Interiors are expertly curated with natural tones that complement the views beyond your windows, full of curated bookshelves, wood burners, and vintage radios.

If you’d like, you can take over the property under exclusive use, perfect for large family and group gatherings of around 40 people.

The Louma Touch

The level of hospitality here is exceptional without being overbearing. Staff are among the kindest and most attentive I’ve met and you feel welcomed as family from the moment you arrive. Nothing is too much, with team members on hand to assist whenever you need, or to just give you a cheery good morning/afternoon wherever you happen to find them.

Rather than checking in behind a desk, you’re greeted at the map outside the Main Barn with an optional glass of estate Cuvée or a coffee, before a casual sit down chat and walk through of your personal itinerary – which can also conveniently be found on an iPad in your suite throughout your stay.

Louma’s Wine and Vineyards

One of the first focuses at Louma was further developing the vineyard to meet growing demand for English wine tourism. The Dorset terroir is primarily lime-rich white chalk, on the same subterranean seam connecting the North and South Downs and onward across the Channel to Champagne.

The maritime climate enables the Louma team to grow five grape varieties across nearly 30,000 vines:

  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir
  • Pinot Meunier
  • Pinot Gris
  • Divico

Winemaker Jonathan Atkin was a perfect fit for Louma with his own interest in regenerative farming. Throughout the year, they manage the vineyards as naturally as possible. Sheep graze the weeds to avoid glyphosate, while ponds, wildflowers and an apiary attract pollinators.

We met with Jonathan and Michelle, who heads up their wine tourism strategy, for an overview of the vines before a guided tasting of five Louma wines that evening, including their Cuvée, Sparkling Rosé, and three stills: Chardonnay, Rosé and Pinot Noir. I found all five excellent. And I’m not the only one recognising them. The 2020 Chardonnay won the 2025 WineGB Bronze award, while their Special Cuvée brought home Gold.

Part of Louma’s charm is how interwoven farm life is with daily and seasonal rhythms. A garden tour took us through the kitchen herb garden, an incredible glass and timber greenhouse, two polytunnels, and a new fruit cage.

On the Animal Tour, we met friendly Dorset Horn and Swiss Valais sheep, as well as some of this year’s lambs, before visiting the 100+ chickens that supply the kitchen with around 80 farm-fresh eggs daily, and took a buggy out to a field to see the beef and dairy cows.

Meals are a familial affair. Breakfasts are set in the Farmhouse with its glorious open kitchen, where you’re greeted with fresh pastries, juices and a selection of hot options. Lunch is served in the Main Barn with three fresh salads, soup, and two hot dishes (my advice: try everything). Dinner sees you back in the Farmhouse, with fresh-baked focaccia and flavoured butters of the day. Next comes an amuse bouche, followed by three courses. Every bite was farm fresh and utterly delicious.

Seasonal British menus are on a four-day rotation in tight collaboration between the kitchen and garden teams, so when staying several nights, you’ll have a fresh selection each day.

Digital Detox: The Wellness Barn

Not to be missed, Louma’s wellness programme rounds out the immersive rural luxury experience. Another converted farm building, the Wellness Barn now houses Louma’s spa and gym facilities beneath striking timber beams. Inside is balmy, with a pool, sauna and cold bucket shower, alongside state-of-the-art gym equipment.

Treatments use Wildsmith products and are attuned to your circadian rhythm. I enjoyed a 45-minute neck and shoulder massage, but you can also choose from hot & cold stone massage, Indian Head Massage, Myofacial release, facials and even Reiki. This all adds to the natural ambience, with every moment at Louma curated for rest and rejuvenation.

Activities on Offer

Complimentary activities include animal, garden and woodland walks, as well as stable tours. There are also a number of local trails connecting Louma to the South West Coast Path for those keen to follow in the footsteps of Raynor Winn. Picnics can be provided to enjoy on the beach or the estate.

Two heated pools, indoor and out, are available to swim year-round, while the Cow Barn which overlooks vineyards, is available for private yoga, pilates, and breathwork sessions. For those interested in exploring by four feet, rather than two, you can hop in the saddle with horseback rides and lessons, including private day rides exploring the Dorset countryside.

Nature on the Estate

Aerial of vineyard and landscape at Louma

If, like me, you’re a nature-lover, Louma is a little slice of heaven. Native hedges and wildflowers promote biodiversity, so every time you open your door, you’re greeted with birdsong. Highlights included watching swooping swifts keep bugs at bay over the pool, a flock of goldfinches chittering behind my suite, and even spotting a chaffinch and greenfinch (new lifers for me). Pheasants offer a regular, staccato reminder that you’re not in the city.

A timber walkway was created through the estate’s 120+-year-old woodland, where you can explore among an astonishing array of over 270 tree and shrub species. Another option is to walk through the pastures and down to the beach, which will take you just under an hour, but is a perfect way to enjoy a sunny day.

Planning Your Dorset Getaway with SmoothRed

There’s so much available that I left craving more time. Louma offers a new kind of luxury: space, time and the ability to switch off in an indulgent, but never lavish natural environment.

My advice is to give yourself an extra night. Two would be my minimum, while three to four will allow you to fully unwind, while also leaving time to explore areas nearby. This is the perfect place for a romantic countryside getaway or extended weekend break in the UK.

Here’s how I would suggest planning your Dorset wine and countryside break:

  • A 2-3 night Countryside Retreat. We’ll work with you and the Louma team to curate the perfect itinerary from their activity list that enables you to fully switch off and embrace everything on offer in the Dorset countryside.
  • A 2-Night Dorset Wine Experience. Enjoy a vineyard tour and private tasting at Louma, curated with English sparkling or vertical tastings, alongside a private day tour to explore other nearby estates such as Lyme Bay and Langham.
  • A 4-Night Dorset and Devon Wine Tour. Stay two nights at Louma before carrying on down the coast to Devon, tasting the best of the South West. Alternatively, start in Sussex and end in Dorset.
  • A 6-8 Night South Coast Wine Tour. Start in Kent and end in Devon, with two nights each in Kent, Sussex, Dorset and Devon and compare the best of southern England’s blossoming wine industry. This is the perfect, immersive English wine country deep dive.
  • A 7-10 Night City, Country and Coastal Tour. Coming from abroad? Start with a few nights in London, before transferring down for a couple nights at Louma before carrying on to Cornwall. Combine exceptional gastronomy, wine and sea for an authentically English experience.

No matter your interests, every trip we create is tailormade. Our Travel Designers will work with you to curate an itinerary that fits your palate and interests into your perfect trip.
