Adventure in the Adriatic means more than just what you see, however. It means downing oysters in the evening sun, island-hopping on a classic yacht and wandering the picturesque, cobbled streets of an old town, picturing yourself in a scene from the Game of Thrones. With cultural hotspots such as Dubrovnik and Zadar cities, coupled with natural wonders like Plitvice Lakes and Mljet Island, this is a wonderful country to explore.

Croatia’s wines are as diverse as they are underrated. In terms of production, Croatian vines are two-thirds white and one-third red. Over 300 wine regions use a wide array of grape varieties to produce an almost endless supply of wine – mostly whites, but with more than a few reds and even the occasional rosé here and there.

Croatian wines are also relatively unheard of, or so you may think – and that’s largely due to the spellings of Croatian winery exports! With intriguing sounding labels such as Grk, Posip, Malvazija Istarska, and Graševina there’s a lot to get your tongue around and we don’t just mean where wine tasting is concerned. The Croatian Tribidrag grape is virtually identical to Zindanfel (or Primitivo) and produces similar red wines, rich, flavoursome with higher alcohol and lower acidity.

The Dingač region, in particular, is renowned for its reds, made from the Plavac Mali grape that’s harvested off the region’s stunning hillside vineyards. Plavac Mali, translates to ‘little blue’ and permeates into the colour of the wine, think berry, cherry and a hint of spice and pepper notes.

The stunning isle of Korcula is renowned for its Pošip, a crisp sweet white that has now branched out to find a home on other islands such as Hvar, Brac, and the Pelješac peninsula, it’s truly a default wine of the whole Dalmatia region.

It may not be top of most peoples’ list in terms of European wine regions, but that’s not because Croatia is anything other than an outstanding place for wine-lovers to visit. It’s just because they don’t know it yet.
