The best company with pasta? Primitivo in Puglia
The region of Puglia lies in the heel of Italy and is a wine and food lover’s paradise. Home to some of the world’s finest primitivo wines and an honest earth-to-table cuisine this is one of our favourite places to recommend for foodies, wine enthusiasts and sensualists – with one of the longest coastlines in Italy – the Adriatic coast lies to the east and the Mediterranean to the left so you’re never far from its emerald-green waters, glittering limestone precipices and long sandy beaches and of course the vineyards. With far fewer tourists than some of its neighbouring regions, Puglia is perfect for those holiday makers wishing to feel off the beaten track.
And the wines? Puglia produces the greatest amount of wine of all the Italian winemaking regions, with Puglian wines making up just under 20% of Italy’s total output! Puglian wines are mostly red, high in alcohol content and use the Primitivo, Sangiovese and Negroamaro grape varieties above others. They have a reputation for having a dark, concentrated character and offering a strong balance of sweetness and density. And naturally, they’re pretty good with pasta!
