Trip details

Day 1

San Sebastián – a place impossible not to fall madly in love with.  Your boutique belle-époque-style hotel is (utterly gorgeous and) superbly located overlooking the beach on the historic Concha Bay. Spend some time exploring the beautiful Church of San Vicente and the Plaza de la Constitución. Why not enjoy a meal of a lifetime at the three-star Michelin restaurant  Arzak –   seven unforgettable courses curated by highly talented chef Jean Mari Arzak and founder of the new Basque cuisine.

Day 2

The following day, meet with your private guide and visit the attractive medieval fishing settlement of Getaria, a world away from nearby cosmopolitan San Sebastián. Here you will have a tour of a wonderful local winery, followed by a tasting of the Txakoli wines with delicious local seafood products. Savour lunch at Elkano, a famed family restaurant in Getaria which is a near-perfect example of an authentic Basque asador, before travelling back to Bilbao.

Day 3

A free day to explore the beautiful city and cement your love affair as you explore the picturesque promenades lined with Belle Époque buildings. Or why not visit Bilbao and discover the Guggenheim Museum and explore the modern artwork it houses. Admire the stunning architecture of the Frank Gehry-designed building and then enjoy a tapas lunch in the city!

If you are feeling energetic, why not escape the city and take a hike up Mount Hernio for undoubtedly the best views of the Basque country! Please ask for details.

The Rioja Vineyards at Elciego
Day 4

Self-drive at your leisure to the capital of La Rioja and stay in a central boutique hotel set in a restored 16th-century palace. That evening, why not enjoy a tapas crawl in Logroño on Calle Laurel. The highlight of a visit to Rioja is being able to stroll along streets, well-known for the pintxos bars, each one offering its own gastronomical specialties!

Day 5

Your tour of Rioja continues with a full-day private wine tasting experience around the region. Immerse yourself in the ancient winemaking traditions of Rioja on this tour that includes stops in both Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, with your English speaking guide who will chauffeur you for the day. Discover the ancient underground cellars and also the amazing architecture of the most emblematic wineries of the region.

You will visit a variety of estates and explore an ancient vineyard dating to the 14th Century. This is followed by a typical Riojan tapas lunch. In the afternoon, explore the beautiful walled town of Laguardia followed by an exceptional estate visit and tasting, before returning to your hotel and reflecting on the day’s delights!

Day 6

A day to explore Rioja at your leisure. Why not ride e-bikes through the vineyards or indulge in lunch at the famed Marqués de Riscal estate! The headlining Michelin-starred restaurant at the hotel and winery dazzles with its creative multicourse menus and sweeping views of the vineyards. (Lunch is not included) Or if you have the time, a visit to the impressive Dinastía Vivanco museum is always a must.

Ribero del Duero Wineries in Spain
Day 7

As your self-drive holiday in Spain unfolds, discover the wonders of the Ribera del Duero, travelling past medieval castles, ancient walled cities and wildflower fields, before you arrive in Aranda del Duero. Stay in a restored 300-year-old flour mill, now a charming boutique hotel in Ribera. With aromas of baked lamb abundant, this might be your first opportunity to sample the famous local cuisine.

Day 8

Your private wine guide will arrive after breakfast and accompany you as you explore the architectural jewel that has already become a symbol of Ribera del Duero with a spectacular visit to start your day.

Drive down the famous Golden Mile and and visit a family-owned cellar which has been making wine for over 120 years. For lunch, sample a platter of suckling lamb with the wines of Ribera del Duero before visiting one of the most renowned wineries in Ribera del Duero. This estate, which owns over 200 hectares of vineyard, is one of Spain’s most modern and cutting edge wineries.

Day 9

After breakfast, a chance to explore the region at leisure. The banks of the Río Duero are lined with impressive castle ruins amid charming old towns such as El Burgo de Osma and Lerma. Or you could always explore the larger city of Valladolid, located in the province of Castile and León to marvel at the Cathedral of Valladolid.

Day 10

As you meander home, why not stop and visit Peñafiel Castle located in Peñafiel, Valladolid. Or for those left wanting more still, extend your Spanish road trip and head East to Priorat, another one of the stand-out Spanish wine regions, or set the SatNav and cruise to the coast to explore Barcelona!
