England

Let SmoothRed take you on a journey through the world of English winemaking, lauded in the industry for the quality of their sparkling wines. Visit quaint, quintessential English villages, enjoy the countryside views across the Garden of England and taste a wide range of the country’s very finest produce.

When you think of great wine, it can be easy to imagine the heartlands of Europe: Tuscany’s rolling hills or the sprawling vineyards which reach out over the Bordelaise countryside. Most people don’t consider the booming viticulture epicentre in the South of England.

That’s all changing, though. As the summers grow warmer and the climate becomes more suitable to winemaking, the English wine industry is leaping from strength to strength. Now, the little English wineries popping up around the country are beginning to produce wines that are more than capable of matching anything from the continent. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus are varieties of grape that are beginning to thrive in the South East and feature heavily in the 500 vineyards in this corner of England.

Or, if you fancy a weekend escape discovering other parts of the UK, why not visit our sister brand, Weekend Getaway where you’ll find a fabulous collection of tailor-made trips.

In recent years, English wine has been enjoying a boom.  For the past decade, England has been a fierce contender in the world of wine production, with now more than 450 wineries. The best way to become educated is by meeting the winemakers themselves at the estate, where you’ll discover the processes behind growing and blending award-winning wines. There really has never been a better time to enjoy English wine tours.

The three major regions to know are:

  • Sussex
  • Kent
  • Surrey

All three regions, with their close proximity to one another, combine perfectly to offer the ultimate English wine tour.

Sparkling wine still accounts for 68% of all English and Welsh wine produced. The most popular grapes varieties grown in English vineyards are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bacchus, as well as Pinot Meunier, Reichensteiner and Ortega.
